Historical references to footstools date back thousands of years to as far as the Ancient Egyptian civilisation, where they were used as a way for high-ranking people to climb easily up to their equally-high chairs. Over the millennia, the humble footstool has become not only a practical item on which to rest the feet but a design feature in its own right, complementing a room's decor and other pieces of furniture.
The oldest footstool still in existence is also the world's earliest surviving piece of upholstered furniture. Covered with luxurious purple velvet and made with a beech wood frame, the footstool belonged to William Juxon, who was the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1660 until his death three years later in 1663.
